Media Watch: Twitter Shrinks as News Referral Source; Podcasts Creation Falls off a Cliff

Twitter never drove much traffic to news publishers, notes the Nieman Lab, but for most publishers it has more recently shrunk from a tiny referral source to an even tinier one, despite Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s false claim that “Twitter drives a massive number of clicks to other websites/apps.” Meanwhile, The Verge notes that new podcast creation “has fallen off a cliff.” The number of new shows dropped by nearly 80 percent between 2020 and 2022. “Creators seem to recognize that until podcast discovery improves, launching a podcast may be a losing proposition,” notes TV.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: Sony World Photo Youth and Student Shortlists

It's only January, but the Sony World Photography Awards contest has revealed the shortlists for its Student and Youth competitions—both of which aim to “uplift the next generation of photographers and inspire them in the next steps of their photography journey,” according to the World Photography Organization. The Youth competition features work by photographers under 19, while the Student competition shortlist includes images from ten students at leading international higher education institutions.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: Shutterstock Launches Its Own Generative AI Image Tool

Last year, Shutterstock announced a partnership with OpenAI, creator of the Dall-E 2 AI image-generating platform. The agreement, notes TechCrunch, made the Shutterstock library availablel to Open AI to train the algorithm. Now, adds, Gizmodo, the fruits of the partnership are being rolled out with Shutterstock’s own generative AI tool. The new Creative Flow online design platform allows Shutterstock customers to create images based on text prompts, powered by OpenAI and Dall-E 2.
