Industry News: After Acquisition, Canva Promises to Keep One-Time Fee for Affinity Software

Web-based design platform  Canva recently announced it had acquired Affinity, the pro photo-editing software suite that includes Affinity Photo. Earlier this year, PetaPixel  picked Affinity Photo as the best overall alternative to Photoshop, praising it for its one-time fee and no subscription. The move by Canva, an Australia-based startup, sparked concern regarding the future of its one-time purchase pricing model. David Breashears, a mountain climber and cinematographer who reached the summit of Mount Everest five times--once for a film that became the highest-grossing IMAX documentary ever--died on March 14 at his home in Marblehead, Mass., at age 68. Leica’s newly opened flagship store at 406 W, 13th Street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking district continues the company’s evolution “from photography icon to lifestyle brand,” declares Glossy, noting that Leica has invested heavily in watches and other luxury goods. Designed in monochrome shades of gray, the store pays homage to the black-and-white street photography of legendary New York photographers like Ralph Gibson and Bruce Gilden, adds the website. Austin, Texas-based anthropologist, photographer, and artist Amanda Stronza creates exquisite memorials for dead animals that she finds on the side of the road and then photographs them to share with the world. Her mission, notes Boing Boing, is to honor the animals and remind us to see the beauty in the discarded and mundane. “For as long as I can remember, I have stopped to lift dead animals from roads.
