When OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the world by storm last year, it caught many power brokers in both Silicon Valley and Washington, DC, by surprise. Now, notes Wired, The Biden administration will use the Defense Production Act to compel tech companies to inform the government when they train an AI model using a significant amount of computing power. The new requirement will give the US government access to key information about some of the most sensitive projects inside OpenAI, Google, Amazon, and other tech companies competing in AI, adds Wired.

Canadian Geographic magazine, which celebrates the talented photographers of the true north with its Canadian Photos of the Year competition, has named its 2023 winners. They include British Colombia-based Brandon Broderick, who wins the Canadian Photographer of the Year award for a portfolio of images focusing on ethical wildlife photography. “Broderick’s Tumbler Ridge surroundings offered chances to capture some of his favorite species, particularly the Canada lynx,” notes the magazine. Artist Richard Prince and his galleries, Gagosian and Blum & Poe, have reached a settlement in two copyright lawsuits brought by photographers whose images were used without permission by Prince in his “New Portraits” series. The news comes after years-long litigation over whether Prince’s series, consisting of Instagram screenshots Prince reproduced on canvas and paired with his own commentary, exceeded the boundaries of copyright protections, notes Art News. Prince agreed to pay at least $650,000 to the two photographers, Donald Graham and Eric McNatt. The New York Times has more.
