Fake File: Viral Photo Does Not Show Lia Thomas Protest

When University of Pennsylvania transgender swimmer Lia Thomas won the 500-yard freestyle event at the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming Championship, she made history. Following her win, a photo quickly went viral online, which many claimed to show the second, third and fourth place swimmers protesting against Thomas’ inclusion in the competition. Poynter did the fact checking. “The best way to add context to a photo is by doing a reverse image search. Screenshotting and uploading the photo to Google Images brought up several results,” notes the site. Bottom line: The viral podium photo simply doesn’t show female swimmers protesting Lia Thomas’ win.   Read the full Story >>

Books: The Turbulence of Eastern Europe in the 1990s

In the 1990s, photographer Robin Graubard left New York – where she’d come of age against the backdrop of 1960s counterculture and 1970s punk – and bought an airline ticket to Prague. She ended up staying for several years, along the way documenting the Bosnian War (while staying in a hotel in besieged Sarajevo) and witnessing the turbulence in Eastern Europe following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Trending: Support the Dirck Halstead Internship

Before he died in March at age 85, photojournalist Dirck Halstead expressed a wish that an internship in his name be created at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, where his archive resides. The program aims to expand the understanding of photography as historical evidence, introduce interns to the practice of photographic-archives management and aid the Briscoe Center with preservation and access to the collections of photojournalists.
