Friday, December 5, 6-9pm: Eliana Pérez | Ajar at PS109

Join the artist and friends for this pop-up exhibition at El Barrio’s Artspace PS109. This tapestry and book pairing that depicts the parasitic exploitation of migrants passing through El Tapón del Darién, the narrow land bridge connecting the Americas. See this alongside 3 of her other artist books, all detailing intractable challenges affecting her native country of Colombia, including:

Only Good For Crying: A block of laser-engraved cast acrylic panels, documenting the brutal tactics used by the militarized Colombian police forces in suppressing peaceful citizen protests. COCA: A gilded, currency-collage book, continuing Eliana’s evocative exploration at the bloody intersection of poverty, violence, and the global market economy. Falso +: A record of military atrocity from the early 2000’s, wherein the Colombian army abducted and murdered 6402 innocent men and boys, passing them off as rebel combatants.

Continuing through December 17: Out of the Shadows at Carter Burden Gallery

A national call for art, juried by Karin Bruckner, Stephen Cimini, and Stewart Siskind, invited artists to step Out of the Shadows and explore how light and shade reflect personal, social, and artistic experience. The interplay of light and darkness evokes themes of memory, mystery, and revelation—revealing how transformation can emerge from obscurity.

The 76 selected artists responded with diverse approaches and inventive use of materials, in works across diverse mediums including painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture, and installation.
