Midjourney is trying to force Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. to reveal how they use artificial intelligence as it defends itself from a potentially ruinous copyright lawsuit. The studios sued the AI image company last year, accusing it of enabling massive infringement of their copyrighted characters. Midjourney has claimed “fair use” and has argued that the studios are engaged in the very same AI practices, notes Variety. In June, a magistrate judge limited Midjourney’s ability to obtain discovery from the studios about their AI use. But Midjourney’s lawyers have filed a motion urging the judge to overturn his decision. Read the full Story >>

Ecuadorian independent visual storyteller and educator Johanna Alarcón is the winner of the 2026 Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award for her series “When the Earth Gives Birth,” which explores Indigenous maternal healthcare in Ecuador. Her work, notes FotoDocument, “is rooted in long-term collaborative processes that explore collective memory and the relationship between community and territory.” Named after British photographer Marilyn Stafford, the award is given to female photographers addressing social issues, adds The Guardian. Flickr and the Black Women Photographers community are teaming up for round four of their grant partnership, and this year they’re going bigger than ever by offering a $10,000 grant to a Black female or non-binary photographer. There’s also a two-year Flickr Pro membership and a one-year SmugMug Pro membership. Ten additional recipients will each receive a one-year Flickr Pro membership and one-year SmugMug Pro membership. The theme of this year’s grant cycle is “Connection.” Applications will close on August 6, and the winners will be announced at the Mode by Flickr festival in Sept. Read the full Story >>
