Franco Fontana, an Italian photographer famous for turning landscapes into abstract images through the masterful use of color, geometry and shadows, died on Aug. 29 at the age of 92, Reuters reports. Born in 1933 in Cognento, on the outskirts of Modena, Italy, Fontana took up photography as a hobby in the early 1960s while working as a decorator, adds Wanted in Rome. Some of his best-known pictures — showing southern Italian beaches or countryside in stark, bright colors, sometimes featuring a single tree, cloud or human shadow — evoked the work of abstract painter Mark Rothko. Millennials and boomers had to learn to live in the modern digital world in a way Gen Z, the first generation of “digital natives,” didn’t have to. Italian photographer Niccolò Rastrelli’s project IRL (in real life) examines what life is like for a generation whose mother tongue is the internet. Rastrelli, notes The Guardian, photographed his subjects in their bedroom and also asked each of them to pick snapshots of their phone screens that represented their usual activity. “Many of them use social media less than people from my generation,” he says. An image made by a Palestinian photographer was removed from a sports photography festival in the French coastal city of Deauville after organizers got requests from unnamed sources, according to the Anadolu Agency, the state-run news agency of Turkey. Minimalist Photography Awards Thursday September 3, 2026
Marcin Giba has been named the overall winner of the 2026 Minimalist Photographer of the Year competition for his series “The Last Winter,” which captures the frozen landscape near his hometown of Rybnik, Poland. The images in the series, shot with a drone, turn “ice, snow, and texture into something closer to portraiture, notes DIY Photography. Marcin says that his series also carries a personal meaning for him: He remembers the winters of his childhood as cold, frosty, and white. Such winters are becoming less frequent, however.
