Passing: Rodney Charles, Cinematographer of '24' and More, Dies at 80

Rodney Charters, the cinematographer who shot 184 episodes of the landmark television series  24 and helped craft the show’s distinctive look, died suddenly in Amsterdam on September 13 at age 80. “Charters’ work on the Kiefer Sutherland-starring thriller was structured to capture the energy and chaos of Jack Bauer’s 24-hour scramble each season,” notes Deadline. “We’ve evolved to the point where we always shoot a scene in its entirety — it’s never broken into setups,” Charters told American Cinematographer in 2004.   Read the full Story >>

Spotlight: Exploring the WWII Bunkers of Italy's South Tyrol

At the outbreak of World War II, the Fascist Italian regime built a series of fortifications along the country’s northernmost border. Construction was halted at the onset of the war, and the military controlled what had been completed until 1993. For photographer  Vincenzo Pagliuca, these purpose-built structures spurred “an intrepid yet pensive body of work,” notes Colossal. The work is collected in Pagliuca’s book Bunker. “The bunkers represent a difficult legacy, ecalling a dramatic historical period in Central Europe,” notes publisher Hartmann Books.   Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Prices Are Raising, but Nikon's Z5 IIC is a Cheaper Full-Frame Camera

Nikon has announced the Z5 IIC, a simplified version of the Z5 II that removes the EVF, reduces the quality of the rear LCD, drops the dual card slots, and cuts out the AF joystick in exchange for $450 in savings, notes PetaPixel. Exhibitions: What Made Gordon Parks the Photographer He Was

On view at New York’s Jack Shainman Gallery through Nov. 6 is “Voices in the Mirror,” an exhibition “that revisits images by Gordon Parks through the reflections of the people and families he photographed." The exhibition, which marks the 20th anniversary of The Gordon Parks Foundation, features reflections on Park’s work by the families of Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, Alice and Rebecca Walker, Bryan Stevenson, Ava DuVernay, Hank Willis Thomas and others.
