Call for Submissions: The PhMuseum 2025 Photography Grant

The 13th edition of the PhMuseum Photography Grant is now welcoming submissions. The open call offers €10,000 in cash prizes to support photographers and recognise the importance of visual storytelling. Three applicants will be granted solo shows with their work at the PhEST festival in Monopoli, Italy; the  Getxophoto festival in Getxo, Spain; and the PhMuseum Lab in Bologna, Italy. For the past year, The New York Times has been investigating how a drive for online fame has created a marketplace on Instagram of girl influencers who are managed by their parents — Instagram does not allow children under 13 to have their own accounts — and frequently draw an audience of men. Those looking to supercharge their daughters’ online presence sometimes tap into a network of photographers and other men, The Times found, many of them convicted of sex crimes or accused of pedophilia, who participate in the grooming of children under the guise of working as social media professionals.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: Judge Wears VR Headset to View Crime Evidence in Legal First

A judge in Florida has set a precedent that might forever change the US legal system, notes Vice: In what is believed to be a legal first, Judge Andrew Siegel of Broward County, Florida, allowed a virtual reality (VR) simulation of an alleged assault crime to be submitted as evidence during a trial. The defendant in the case, Miguel Albisu, owner of a wedding venue, was charged with waving a gun to clear guests. Albisu’s lawyer asked the judge to view the event from his client’s perspective, via an immersive experience using the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Palestinian Photographers on Identity and Home

An exhibition at Palo Gallery in New York spotlights three young Palestinian photographers whose works explore themes like home, displacement, identity and geography—notions that are all the more poignant in light of the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, notes The Art Newspaper.
