A wide-angle view of a winding desert road. A portrait of a student who has overcome bullying. A macro shot of two photogenic dragonflies.

Those some of the images shortlisted in the American Photography Open 2023 competition. Our competition is open to photographers at all levels using all types of devices, and since launching this year’s edition in March, we’ve be looking at entries from around the globe—from Spain, Bulgaria, Kolkata and Indonesia to New Jersey, Alaska, California and other U.S. states. We viewed the northern lights, Parisian street scenes, centenarians and sharks, captured with skill, tenderness, and daring.

Choosing 50 for our shortlist was incredibly hard. But now that the judges have had their say, feel free to go to the Pro Photo Daily Facebook page and “Like” choose your favorites. We’re certain that, like us, you’ll come away with a renewed appreciation for photography’s power to thrill, provoke and document the people and events that shape our world.

And stay tuned, because we’ll be back shortly to announce the winners of our Travel and Landscape category sponsored by Tamron Americas and the 10 American Photography Open 2023 finalists. All will receive prizes from our partners, and the Open Grand Prize winner will receive $5,000.

Go here to see this year’s Shortlist. Congratulations to all.
