American Photography Open 2022: Announcing This Year's Shortlist

By David Schonauer   Wednesday September 21, 2022

A lunar eclipse, from beginning to end.

A Coney Island fashion shoot, including Nathan’s Famous.

A winter storm in Norway, complete with whipping snow.

These are the subjects of some of the images shortlisted in the American Photography Open 2022 competition. The judges have had their say, and now you can go to the Pro Photo Daily Facebook page and “Like” the images you admire.

Since announcing this year’s AP Open contest in March, we’ve been hard at work viewing photographs sent from all around the world. The competition is open to photographers at every level shooting with any kind of device. As in previous years, this year’s entries captured the magnificence of nature and the diversity of humanity. Winnowing down those entries to a shortlist of 50 was hard but also reassuring: We came away once again with a renewed sense of the photography’s power to thrill, provoke and document the people and events that shape our world, by photographers from Bangladesh to Brussels to Brooklyn and all over the world.

And stay tuned, because we’ll be back shortly to announce the winners of the SanDisk “Share Your World” competition and the 10 American Photography Open 2022 finalists. All will receive prizes from our partners, and the Open Grand Prize winner will receive $5,000.

Go here to see this year’s Shortlist. Congratulations to all.
