For one fantastic season, circa 85, from the wings in theaters from Harlem to Paris, I was mesmerized by the beauty and power of the company founded and shepherded by the legendary Arthur Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell, as the troops called him, was the first African American Principal Male Dancer of the world-renowned New York City Ballet in 1955. He founded the company in reaction to the civil unrest shaping the country during the 1960s in response to the societal struggles for equal rights.

Cherished childhood memory of me and my dad during the summer of ’98. We lived at my grandparents’ small East Los Angeles home briefly yet I have many core memories that I reminisce from our time living there. The door fence in the background is a motif found throughout the rest of this series. It was made by my grandpa. We couldn’t afford a proper fence so he made this from scrap doors from the factory he worked at, at the time. With this series I wanted to capture the warm, happy emotions I feel when looking back at these childhood moments.

This painting captures the Summerall Guards practicing on the quad of Third Battalion for their halftime performance during Parents’ Weekend. Led by TAC Officer Sergeant Major Ragusa, depicted on the left with his arms raised and hands in the circular cheerio gesture, membership in the platoon is considered a high honor. The Guards’ precise drill, which has never been written down, is performed to a silent count and reflects the exactness and thoroughness with which each cadet is trained. The Guards carry their 1903 Springfield rifles and wear a distinctive uniform that includes a black Summerall t-shirt, black Chuck Taylor shoes, green Dickies pants, white gloves, and a tan belt.

This spot right here is 43rd Street, close to Times Square. When you cruise through here around 6 PM on a summer evening, it’s a hustle and bustle—traffic buzzing and buildings catching the sunset on their glass, throwing rays all over the place. I once strolled through here on a rainy spring day, and the sky wasn’t all painted in pinks back then. Luckily, summer’s just around the corner, bringing its vibes. Up ahead, he perched high on a utility pole like some quirky backpacker. The view’s top-notch up there, and no traffic hassle.

We have to conclude the story with a snowy day in New York. A dim blue hue blankets the sky, orange-yellow lights glow from windows, and a couple of pedestrians always linger on the streets. She’s there too, waiting on Beaver St for someone. Will the other person show up? Do they still remember the appointment? In this bustling and chaotic city, who will she and we meet next? At least for now, we stand here, just concluding our first encounter.

The Caribou

Inspired by Chessy Normile’s ”The Caribou,” an interpretation that and explores the delicate tension between escapism and rootedness, the yearning for the wildness of nature against the constraints of a settled life. The central focus evokes the narrator’s bound foot, subtly conﬁned by a leash. This restraint visually clashes with the sprawling natural landscape suggested in the background, a boundless lawn brimming with tall prairie grass. The juxtaposition speaks to the narrator’s state of being. Bound to her marriage, not conﬁned, anchored by herself, she ﬁnds imaginative escape alongside her astronomer partner, their minds reaching towards the cosmos. There’s a bittersweet quality here—the potential for boundless exploration, yet ultimately grounded by reality. Her dress suggests this internal struggle; the leash concealed, perhaps even willfully ignored. The blurry backdrop through the night-vision lens reinforces this – it’s a glimpse into her boundless dreamscape, yet claustrophobic and limited. She’s physically rooted in the ordinary, while her spirit soars like the caribou across the untamed earth.
