Aperture, the nonprofit foundation that was established in 1952 as a publisher and promoter of photography, is opening its new headquarters on the Upper West Side of Manhattan this month. “The street-level presence on Columbus Avenue at West 78th Street, opposite an entrance to the American Museum of Natural History, will give Aperture a visibility that its leaders hope will lead to greater civic engagement,” notes The New York Times, which tours the new gallery and bookstore. On view through April 18, 2027 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the exhibition “Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial” brings together photography that captured a portrait of America in the years surrounding the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial. The exhibition is organized into four geographic sections, with work by Lee Friedlander and Bruce Davidson (the Northeast); Robert Townsend Jones Jr. (the South); Joel Meyerowitz (the Midwest); and Mark Klett (the West) among others. At $1,899, the newly announced Canon EOS R8 Mark II comes with a 24.2MP full-frame sensor in a body that weighs under 18oz. “If you shoot travel, weddings, or content and hate carrying a heavy kit, this camera is worth a closer look,” notes DIY Photography. The headline upgrade over the original R8 is stabilization, adds DIYP: The R8 had none. The Mark II brings a 5-axis IBIS system rated to 7.5 stops at the center. Burst shooting also got a real boost.
