Photographer Tyler Mitchell has been awarded the $250,000 Don Tyson Prize for the Advancement of American Art by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Mitchell is the sixth recipient of the prize. The cash prize, established in 2016 by the Tyson family in honor of the late Don Tyson, former chairman and CEO of Tyson Foods, recognizes individuals and institutions working in any medium whose work changes how the public looks at, thinks about, or experiences American art, notes Artsy. Haylee Davis went to a North Carolina estate sale looking for ginger jars, but someone else had already bought them. Instead, the 23-year-old left with three $10 digital cameras. Back home, Davis, a recent NC State grad, charged one of the cameras and eventually plugged its SD card into her MacBook, where she found eight folders of someone else’s photos. Among the images was a photo of herself in the fourth grade. “Immediately, I was excited and curious,” Davis told People magazine. A search for the origins of the photos ensued.
