Art News: Charli XCX Photo Purchased by National Portrait Gallery

Photographer Harley Weir’s 2023 portrait of singer-actress Charli XCX has been added to the collection of London’s National Portrait Gallery, notes the BBC. Weir’s photo became one of the key images associated with Charli’s Brat era, the 2024 album that became a pop cultural phenomenon for its candor and debauchery, adds The Guardian. Weir “has developed a distinctive photographic language that combines intimacy with a powerful sense of presence,” noted Brandei Estes, the National Portrait Gallery’s senior curator of photographs.   Read the full Story >>

Industry News: Nikon Loses its Patent Lawsuit Against Viltrox

In January, Nikon filed a lawsuit in China against lens manufacturer Viltrox, alleging intellectual property infringement related to Nikon’s Z-mount technology. Now, reports Nikon Rumors,  Nikon has reportedly lost that lawsuit. Nikon was seeking compensation related to Viltrox’s release of products with features and designs related to Nikon’s pending mount design patents.  At issue, explains PetaPixel, was whether Nikon’s pending patents are themselves up to the legal standard of being patented.   Read the full Story >>

Call for Submissions: The 'Dear Dave' Fellowships

Dear Dave, the  tri-annual print publication of photography and writing, has announced the fourth annual Dear Dave Fellowship, to be judged by distinguished panel including writer and critic Jean Dykstra, Magnum Foundation Executive Director Kristen Lubben, and Philadelphia Museum of Art Photography curator Peter Barberie. Three applicants will be chosen to have their portfolio featured in Dear Dave, while the 40 entrants who receive the highest ranking by the jury will have a portfolio in the fellowship archive on the Dear Dave website.
