A 60-year-old who calls himself Dingo (he asked that his real name be kept anonymous so that his day job doesn’t find out) recently talked with Outside magazine about how he captured the historic summer swell that battered SoCal’s beaches and transformed The Wedge—a fin-like break off Newport Beach—into a 25-foot monster. “I try to look straight on at the wave when I shoot, but sometimes I’ll also position myself behind the jetty and use a telephoto lens to aim back toward the crowd,” he says. The Ninth Circuit said on June 9 that en banc panel of 11 judges will rehear an appeal by photographer Jeffrey Sdelik, who sued celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D claiming that a tattoo she created of Miles Davis was based on his 1989 portrait of the jazz legend. In January, despite siding with Von D, U.S. Circuit Judge Kim McLane Wardlaw and U.S. Circuit Judge Anthony Johnstone wrote concurring opinions saying the extrinsic-intrinsic analysis the Ninth Circuit has been using to decide copyright infringement disputes had outlived its use and distorts copyright law, notes Courthouse News. With the passing of Duane Michals on June 9, AnOther has republished an interview in which the photographer recalled a chance encounter with a little-known theater actress destined for greatness. Michals photographed Meryl Streep in 1975 in New York’s theatre district. “I had simply been told she was super talented and big things were in the wings. We went up town and ran around the Marquis theatre and had a lot of fun. I asked her to dance and she was as joyful as she seems in the photograph," Michals recalled. Read the full Story >>

DJI has filed two patent lawsuits against Arashi Vision Inc., which does business as Insta360, regarding its new Luna gimbal camera, notes PetaPixel, with one lawsuit alleging two violations of design patents while the other alleges four utility patent violations. Meanwhile, Insta360 has countersued DJI for what it asserts are violations of five utility patents covering technology used in gimbal and 360-degree cameras. Insta360 claims these technologies are incorporated into several major DJI products, including the Osmo Pocket, Ronin/RS, Osmo Mobile, and Osmo 360. Read the full Story >>
