Social News: EU Says Meta Fails to Protect Children From Using Facebook and Instagram

The European Commission has announced preliminary findings that Instagram and Facebook are in breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA) for "failing to diligently identify, assess and mitigate the risks of minors under 13 years old accessing their services.”  Though the platforms say children under 13 cannot set up an Instagram or Facebook account, minors can easily circumvent the safety measures Meta has put in place to stop them, the EU charges. Art News: Why Contemporary Photographers Are Rejecting the Camera

Following last fall’s “Man Ray: When Objects Dream” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a slew of new exhibitions are popping up focusing on the enduring popularity of camera-less photography, notes Artsy. “By removing or altering the camera, [artists] engage photography at its most elemental—light, time, surface—while also questioning ideas of authorship, representation, and control,” says Natasha Egan, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, whose current exhibition, “MoCP at Fifty: Collecting Through the Decades,” features photograms by artist Bertha E. Projections: Join Photojournalist David Burnett and Astronaut Don Pettit on May 6

Photojournalist David Burnett has captured events around the world over his long career and is known, among other things, for his coverage of the Apollo 11 space program. Astronaut Don Pettit has also been around the world, literally, aboard the International Space Station, where he created magnificent images of the planet below. Honor Roll: Photographers Saher Alghorra and Jahi Chikwendiu Win Pulitzer Prizes

Saher Alghorra has won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news photography, for documenting the toll of Israel's attacks in Gaza. "With international journalists barred from the territory without Israeli escorts, Alghorra, a Palestinian photographer, played a crucial role," notes The New York Times, which published Alghorra's work.
