Social News: Meta Ordered to Pay $375m After Being Found Liable in Child Exploitation Case

A New Mexico jury on Tuesday ordered Meta to pay $375m in civil penalties after it found the company misled consumers about the safety of its platforms and enabled harm, including child sexual exploitation, against its users. This is the first jury trial to find Meta liable for acts committed on its platform, notes The Guardian. “Meta executives knew their products harmed children,” said New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez. who brought the suit against Meta in 2023. Investigators posed as children on Instagram and Facebook to show how easy it is for sexual predators to find and abuse children on the platforms, adds Salon.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Dana Lixenberg's Multilayered Portrait of America

On view through May 24 at the  Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris is the exhibition “Dana Lixenberg: American Images,” a retrospective bringing together three decades of work by the Dutch photographer. The work, notes the museum, is a “multi-layered portrait” of the US “in which celebrities and lesser-known individuals are approached with equal care and portrayed with dignity.” Lixenberg tells Dazed that photographing diverse subjects helped her understand how “everything is  interconnected” in the puzzle of American culture.   Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Nikon Will Fix "Manufacturing Issue" with Some Z5II, Z6III and ZRs

Nikon says it has discovered a "manufacturing issue" affecting a number of Z5II, Z6III and ZR models that may cause the cameras to become inoperable. In a statement, the company blames the issue on the use of "parts that do not meet our quality standards,” notes DP Review. Nikon says it has identified the camera serial number ranges subject to the issue and asked users to check whether their camera is affected. Art News: These Vivian Maier Photographs Could Rewrite Her Market

More than 15 years after the chance discovery of Vivian Maier’s photography in unclaimed Chicago storage locker, a rare trove of 206 sold-out estate prints is coming to market on Artnet Auctions as part of the Important Photographs sale. The estate only began releasing prints in 2011, and each was limited to an edition of 15. With an estimate of $1–1.5 million, the sale could mark a turning point for the market around her work, notes Artnet. “Maier’s secondary market is still relatively new,” says Artnet’s head of photographs.    Read the full Story >>
