Greek photographer Athanasios Maloukos is the top prize winner of the 2026 Travel Photographer of the Year competition for two low-light bodies of work exploring ritual, belief, and movement. One series explores the solemn Holy Week processions of Zamora, Spain, while the other captures the Sema ceremony of whirling dervishes in Konya, Turkey. Shot in low light, both series rely on finely judged shutter speeds to balance blur and stillness. "These images require immense skill to get right," says TPOTY founder Chris Coe. The BBC reports that Gen Z is swamping social media with nostalgia for the mid-teens, with searches for “2016” surging by 452% on TikTok in the first week of this year and more than 56 million videos created using the app’s 2016 filter. For the past ten years, the Los Angeles–based artist Ian James has crisscrossed the United States on a pilgrimage to photograph the country’s manmade pyramids. He’s become rather obsessive about the work, notes Aperture. “I started finding the pyramids on several blogs that looked like they were from the late ’90s or early 2000s, then I began reverse-image-searching those buildings to find more, seeing what Google would spit out,” James says. “It kind of spiraled out from there.” Read the full Story >>
