When Madrid-based Associated Press photographer Manu Fernandez set out to photograph the Las Luminarias festival in San Bartolomé de Pinares, Spain, he knew he’d be playing with fire, literally. His goal was to shoot a little known ritual in which animals pass through flame and smoke as an act of purification. “I photographed this by positioning myself low to the ground, just a few meters from the bonfire, waiting for the horse to enter the flames,” he notes.
