Press groups including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists are calling for the immediate release of independent Chinese photojournalist Du Bin, who has been held by the authorities at the Shunyi Detention Centre in Beijing since October 15. The former New York Times photographer is accused of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” an offence punishable by five years in prison, notes RSF, adding that the charge is routinely used by the Chinese regime to suppress journalists and press freedom defenders. Du has been harassed by Chinese authorities for years.

In 2023, a group of documentary producers formed the Archival Producers Alliance and published an open letter to their industry calling for greater transparency, listing ways generative A.I had been used without disclosure. You might be shocked by what they pointed out, notes The New York Times: artificially created historical voices; A.I.-generated “historical”images”; fake newspaper articles; and nonexistent historical artifacts. The stakes are high, adds The Times, since documentaries ”fundamentally traffic in issues of truth, transparency and trust.”

International Landscape Photographer of the Year Tuesday December 9, 2025
Photographer J. Fritz Rumpf of the US is the Photographer of the Year winner of the 2025 International Landscape Photographer of the Year contest for his abstract images taken taken in the US, Brazil and and Norway. Lukas Trixl of Austria takes the Photograph of the Year top prize for his image “The Land Before Time,” taken on the North Island of New Zealand. This year’s competition drew 3,601 entries, with a $12,500 cash purse for the best Photograph of the Year winners, the best Photographer of the Year winners and five special subject awards.
