Passings: G. Ray Hawkins, Gallerist Who Brought Photography to LA, Dies at 80

When G. Ray Hawkins opened the first public gallery in Los Angeles devoted to photography in 1975, the financial rewards were unremarkable, notes the Los Angeles Times. “I remember when we sold a Cartier-Bresson for $350 — it was a big celebration,” recalls David Fahey, who worked with Hawkins for a decade before creating his own Fahey/Klein Gallery in 1986. “It was a big deal.”  One reason photography is widely valued by collectors and galleries today is from the early efforts of Hawkins, who, reports the Times, died on Dec. 11 at age 80 from an undisclosed illness.   Read the full Story >>

Scarlett Johansson is calling on the government to pass a law limiting the use of AI after a video featuring an AI deepfake of the actress circulated online, notes The Verge. In a statement to People magazine, Johansson said, “It is terrifying that the U.S. government is paralyzed when it comes to passing legislation that protects all of its citizens against the imminent dangers of A.I.” The video in question shows Johansson, along with other Jewish celebrities including Jerry Seinfeld, Mila Kunis, Jack Black, Drake, Jake Gyllenhaal and Adam Sandler, wearing a t-shirt that shows the name “Kanye” along with an image of a middle finger that has the Star of David in the center.   Read the full Story >>

The Photography Show  2025 by AIPAD (Association of International Photography At Dealers) returns to New York’s Park Avenue Armory from April 23 to 27. This year’s photo art fair aims to fuse tradition with innovation, notes the British Journal of Photography, which recently talked with AIPAD Director Lydia Melamed Johnson. Honor Roll: The 2024 Nature inFocus Competition Winners

Wildlife photographer Supun Dilshan is the top winner of the 2024 Nature inFocus photography competition for his portfolio “Trapped Between Worlds,” a collection of images capturing the plight of elephants in Sri Lanka. “It’s heartbreaking to see development at loggerheads with the places these wild animals call home,” said judges Anish Andheria, president of Wildlife Conservation Trust and member of the six-person jury who selected the winners.
