Greg Gorman helped create the "New Hollywood" in the 1980s: His bold black-and-white photographs of actors and other celebrities recalled classic Hollywood studio portraiture of the the 1930s, but with a scintillating and sexy new edge. He’s received a number of honors for his decades of work, including a Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Professional Photographers of America and a Lucie Award for portraiture. He’ll be talking about his images and his famous subjects in a Projections event on Dec. 11. Time: 7:00 pm. Place: via Zoom.

Syrians poured onto the streets of Damascus to celebrate the toppling of former president Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia Sunday after a swift rebel advance, ending more than five decades of crushing dynastic rule, notes CNN. Assad's downfall came less than two weeks after an initial incursion west of the country's second largest city, Aleppo, triggered a cascading series of retreats by the Syrian military, notes NPR, which has photos of jubilation in Damascus from Omar Haj Kadour (AFP via Getty Images) and other photojournalists.

There are lots of ways to make bad photos. Now a couple of researchers have invented a robot that, they say, will take perfect pictures—all it needs to find an ideal composition are some simple instructions or a reference image. “It was a really fun project,” says Oliver Limoyo, one of the creators of PhotoBot. Limoyo conceived PhotoBot while at Samsung, with his manager Jimmy Li, notes IEEE Spectrum. They were working on a project to have a robot take photographs but were struggling to find a good metric for aesthetics.
