In 1968, Lloyd Ziff photographed an art school classmate, Robert Mapplethorpe, and his girlfriend, Patti Smith, in their tiny Brooklyn apartment. “I found them very beautiful,” he said years later. Ziff went on to serve as art director for some of the most influential and visually arresting magazines of the 1970s and ’80s, including Rolling Stone, House & Garden, Vanity Fair and Condé Nast Traveler. But his real love, and eventually his focus, was photography and photographers, notes The New York Times. Ziff died on Aug.1 at age 81.

Abbey Road Studios has announced the shortlisted nominations for the 2024 edition of the Abbey Road Studios Music Photography Awards, which showcases the visual artists who help bring music photography to life. Over 22,000 images from 28 countries were entered in this year’s contest, an increase of over 40 percent from 2023, notes Clash. Categories include Undiscovered Photographer of the Year; Music Moment of the Year; Underground Scenes Award; Editorial, Portrait; and Jazz: The Rebirth of Cool.
