Books: How Guy Bourdin Revolutionized Fashion Photography

The famed French photographer Guy Bourdin made his magazine debut in Paris Vogue with a 1955 series featuring hats shot in front of a butcher’s stall in Les Halles. It was the beginning of a 30-year relationship between the ground-breaking photographer and the magazine. But, notes Artful Living, it was Bourdin’s steeped-in-sex ad campaigns for the Charles Jourdin shoe brand that remains perhaps his most memorable work. Tech News: Leica Zooms In on Action with the Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm F2.8 ASPH Lens

Leica’s newly announced Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm F2.8 ASPH lens is a fast telephoto zoom for L-mount cameras with applications for everything from weddings to sports and wildlife, notes DP Review. (As DIY Photography  puts it, the lensis  for “for all of you fast action, low-light Leica cats out there.”) The new zoom completes Leica's 'Holy Trinity' of fast F2.8 zoom lenses for L-mount, joining the Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm F2.8 ASPH and the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70 2.8 ASPH. Legal Brief: Late Actor's CGI Likeness at Center of Legal Battle

Actor Peter Cushing’s digital resurrection 22 years after his death for the spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is at the center of a legal battle over control of his image, reports The Times of London. Groundbreaking CGI was used to recreate Cushing’s character, Grand Moff Tarkin, from the original Star Wars film. The makers of Rogue One  are being sued by a film producer who was one of Cushing’s oldest friends, who claims the actor agreed not to grant permission for anyone to reproduce his appearance through special effects without his authorization.   Read the full Story >>

Agenda: ICP Will Honor Kathy Ryan on Nov. 13

Since 2012, ICP’s annual Spotlights Benefit has celebrated women in the visual arts, particularly those working in photography and film. Past honorees have included  Zanele Muholi, Catherie Opie, Lynsey Addario, Laurie Simmons, Lauren Greenfield,  and Carrie Mae Weems. This year, the Spotlights Benefit will honor Kathy Ryan, the former Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine, and her “monumental contributions to the world of photography.” When: Nov. 13., 11:30 am to 3:00 pm.
