Leica has announced the 12 photographers shortlisted for the 44th edition of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, which spotlights the role and significance of contemporary photography. The nominees were selected from submissions made by 80 international experts from some 50 countries. The award includes a Main Award and an award for a Newcomer under 30 years old selected from international photography institutions and universities across 20 countries. The two winners will be announced on October 10 at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany.

Two months after saying it was in development, Canon has announced the EOS R1, a 24MP stacked CMOS sensor mirrorless camera aimed at professional sports photographers and photojournalists. The new camera can shoot stills at up to 40fps and can capture 6K/60 Raw video internally, notes DP Review. Canon says the camera can understand and differentiate between various sports, predict body movement, and deliver Canon’s best autofocus performance, adds PetaPixel.

Bill Viola, whose decades-long engagement with video proved vital in establishing the medium as an integral part of contemporary art, died on July 12 at his home in Long Beach, California, notes Art News. He was at 73 years old. Viola’s works are centered around the idea of human consciousness and such fundamental experiences as birth, death, and spirituality. When artists were just beginning to work with video in the early 1970s, Viola quickly earned a reputation as a technical wizard adept at the new recording and editing methods, adds The New York Times.
