Passings: Kathy Willens, Pathbreaking Associated Press Photographer, Dies at 74

Kathy Willens, a pathbreaking photojournalist who helped cement women's place behind the lens everywhere from the Super Bowl to war-torn Somalia during her nearly 45-year career at Associated Press, died on July 16, notes ABC News. She was 74. Specializing in sports, Willens became a photographer of such stature that the New York Yankees paid tribute to her on the field when she retired. “When covering sports, I was almost always the only female on the field,” Willens said in 2021.   Read the full Story >>

Books: Louis Stettner's Images of NYC's Old Penn Station

Louis Stettner, one of the last living members of the avant-garde New York School of Photography, notably captured people performing a skill that is fast being lost in our digital age: reading a broadsheet newspaper on a crowded commuter train. Stettner’s acclaimed 1950s-era images of New York City’s grand-but-destroyed old Penn Station are gathered in a new book, Louis Stettner: Penn Station New York. Industry News: How Canon Hopes to Stay Ahead of Sony in Market Share

Currently, Canon leads competition for global mirrorless camera market share: Canon sits at 41.2 percent, with Sony close behind at 32.1 percent. Nikon is lagging behind the new “Big 2” at 13.2 percent of market share, notes Canon Rumors, which spotlights an interview that Canon Vice President Tsuyoshi Tokura gave to Nikkei recently. In it, Tokura acknowledged that Sony is his company’s “biggest competitor” and noted that Canon’s new R1 flagship mirrorless camera is designed in part to help Canon maintain its lead over Sony.
