Generative AI systems are no different, notes Rest of World, which has run an analysis of AI-generated images showing that generative AI systems have tendencies toward bias, stereotypes, and reductionism when it comes to national identities.

Connecticut photographer Melissa Wilson has struck a chord on social media with an image a couple embracing on a beach, their heads bent towards each other. The black-and-white silhouette of the couple alone would have been striking enough, notes Insider, but “it was all the more arresting because the woman was reaching out backwards to hold the hand of the person carrying their child." Wilson, who specializes in portraits of families, pregnant women and newborns, said it was her first maternity session "with a surrogate and expecting parents.”

Long telephoto focal length lenses are generally large and heavy. Now, notes DP review, Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z 600mm F6.3 VR S lens, a super telephoto that is light enough for long periods of handheld use. The lens achieves its bearable lightness of being thanks to its Phase Fresnel lens element—it is Nikon's second PF lens for the Z series, joining the Nikon Nikkor Z 800mm F6.3 VR S, adds DPR. The new lens is 278mm (11") long and 1,390g (3lbs) in weight. Nikon claims it's the lightest and smallest 600mm in its class.

Photography can be an essential tool for telling and exposing social injustices in the world and for documenting the positive actions taken to combat it, notes L’Oeil de la Photography, which spotlights the 2023 Festival della Fotografia Etica (Ethical Photography Festival) in the northern Italian city of Lodi (through Oct. 29). Now in its 14th edition, the festival features 700 images collected in 20 exhibitions, with images by nearly a hundred photographers from 40 countries. Among the work: Evgeniy Maloletka’s coverage of the siege of Mariupol in Ukraine.
