Passings: Longtime Cotton Bowl Photographer James 'Brad' Bradley Dies at 101

James T. "Brad" Bradley, who photographed 75 Cotton Bowls dating back to 1948, died on Oct. 13 at his Dallas home, notes ESPN. He was 101. Bradley photographed every Cotton Bowl game during that span of years, except for the 2020 contest during the COVID-19 pandemic. He attended Ohio State and first became interested in photography after watching a classmate, four-time Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens, and wanting to photography him. After moving to Dallas, he pioneered the famed "Huck & Buck" style of sports portraiture, in which players posed with stiff-arms, leaping or diving toward the camera.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Genius Grant Winner Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons

Among the 20 winners of this year’s MacArthur “genius” fellowships—each of whom receive an $800,000 grant over the course of five years—is María Magdalena Campos-Pons, who works primarily in photography, performance, audiovisual media, and sculpture. Born in Cuba and based in Nashville, she is considered a key figure in post-revolutionary Cuban art. Her work is on view at the Brooklyn Museum through January 14, 2024, in the exhibition “María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold.” See also: Art in America.   Read the full Story >>

Trending: This Trailer Is Taking Analog Photography to NYC's Streets

For the past year, a silver Airstream trailer has been parked for a month at a time in different neighborhoods across New York City, distributing rolls of 35mm film for free and serving as a darkroom for resident photographers. The mobile photo lab, notes The Art Newspaper, is an ongoing project by the Brooklyn-based art space Worthless Studios, with previous iterations traveling across the US. This edition, called Free Film: NYC, has so far made stops in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn, Manhattan's Lower East Side and the South Bronx. At a time when AI images are raising questions about authenticity and authorship, the Free Film project marks a return to a more physical form of the medium, adds TAN.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: Wildlife Photographer of the Year Winners

Laurent Ballesta is the overall winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 competition for his image of a tri-spine horseshoe crab trailed by three small fish golden trevally fish. An underwater photographer and marine biologist, Ballesta shot the photo in the protected waters of Pangatalan Island in the Philippines. He becomes only the second photographer in WPY's 59-year history to win the competition twice, notes the BBC:  In 2021, he was awarded the grand prize for capturing a trio of groupers in the act of spawning.
