Passings: Paul Ickovic, Photographer at Home on the Street, Dies at 79

Paul Ickovic, whose black-and-white portraits and images of street life in India, Nepal, Cuba, Paris and Prague harked back to the heyday of mid-20th century street photography, died on May 23 at his home in Prague, reports The New York Times. He was 79. Ickovic’s approach to street photography was often likened to that of his hero, Henri Cartier-Bresson: “You find a background that will be your foundation and wait for something to happen in front of it,” noted Robert Klein, Ickovic’s longtime gallerist.   Read the full Story >>

Spotlight: Afrofuturism In the Form of 'Humalians'

Ivorian artist and graphic designer Eric Adé Tanauh, who goes by the pseudonym Rickii Ly, blends the features of human beings and aliens in his series “Humaliens.” Tanauh takes his inspiration from Afrofuturism, an aesthetic that combines African and diaspora cultures with elements of science fiction. The movement, notes CNN, has recently experienced a revival, partly as a result of the hit 2018 film Black Panther. Tanauh say he also draws inspiration from British photographer Juno Calypso and American filmmaker Wes Anderson.   Read the full Story >>

Social News: TikTok Kills Off Its BeReal Clone

TikTok is discontinuing TikTok Now, its BeReal clone, notes Mashable. Like BeReal, TikTok Now required users to take front and rear photos simultaneously. However, it added the ability to take 10-second TikTok-like videos instead of photos, notes Engadget. The feature was launched in in Sept. 2022, when BeReal was Apple's iPhone app of the year. But what goes up sometimes comes down: In April, The New York Times reported that BeReal had about six million daily active users, a 61 percent drop from its peak of about 15 million in October 2022.   Read the full Story >>

On View: The Latin American Photo Festival, in the Bronx

The Bronx Documentary Center will hold its 6th annual Latin American Foto Festival from July 13 to 30, featuring large-scale photographs by both emerging and established photographers. The work, from Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, represents long-term projects on missing persons; femicide; indigenous people's rights; trans rights; youth exodus; Latino and Caribbean contributions to Hip Hop culture; and more.
