Spotlight: Larry Sultan's Painterly Photos of Swimmers

The late Larry Sultan is best known for his "Pictures From Home" series, in which he photographed his aging parents in their suburban southern California home. But The Guardian spotlights an earlier project—images of participants in swimming classes that Sultan began creating in 1974, partly as a way of confronting his own fear of the water. By 1978 he was pursuing the work in earnest, using a small underwater camera and a snorkel to create balletic images of swimmers at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco.   Read the full Story >>

Legal Brief: Florence Museum Wins Copyright Lawsuit Over Image of Michelangelo's "David"

An Italian museum has won a lawsuit against a magazine publisher that used a photo of Michelangelo’s sculpture “David” without permission—even though, notes PetaPixel, the 500-year-old artwork belonging in the public domain. In August 2020, GQ Italia superimposed a photograph of 16th-century statue’s face onto an image of model Pietro Boselli for its cover. But the magazine’s owner, Edizioni Condé Nast, did not pay a usage fee to Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia, which has exhibited the statue since 1873 and owns the image rights to the famed statue.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: An Alternative History of Photography

The result of years of research, the exhibition “Photographs: An Early Album of the World (1842–1911)” at the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chiracin Paris, tells the story of how photography spread to non-European countries, notes Blind, which calls the show “a world tour in 300 images by 101 photographers.” Almost all the work comes from the collection of the museum, which is dedicated to the cultures of Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania—in other words, the non-European world.   Read the full Story >>

Agenda: Apply for APA's LGBTQIAP+ Photography Grant

AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTISTS   Tuesday June 13, 2023

American Photographic Artists has announced its second annual LGBTQIAP+ Photography Grant, sponsored by the APA’s Washington, D.C., chapter. The $3,000 grant is designed to celebrate diversity and help LGBTQIAP+ photographers receive funding and recognition in the professional photography community. Submissions for documentary, narrative, experimental or episodic projects representing LGBTQIAP+ people and their communities are encouraged.
