Runway’s first artificial intelligence software, Gen-1, was able to make new videos using data from existing videos. While impressive, the company’s new Gen-2 software can create full videos entirely from text descriptions in a huge leap for the technology. notes PetaPixel. Runway Gen-2 is the first publicly available tex-to-video model on the market and is able to “realistically and consistently” synthesize new videos. While the videos are not photorealistic, they show the power of the technology.

Officials within and outside of government have warned in recent years about the possible misuse of deepfake tech in disinformation campaigns. But now The Intercept reports that the US Special Operations Command, responsible for some of the country’s most secretive military endeavors, is gearing up to conduct internet propaganda and deception campaigns online using deepfake videos. The plans describe hacking internet-connected devices to eavesdrop in order to assess foreign populations’ susceptibility to propaganda.

Three years ago, as the covid-19 pandemic began taking hold, New York City’s theaters went dark: “Actors no longer graced Manhattan's iconic stages, theater-goers clutching playbills couldn't pack into seats and the excited hubbub of the Theater District fell silent,” notes Time Out New York. But when the streets were empty, photographer Mark Kornbluth got to work photographing the theaters in stunning detail.
