Nikon’s newly announced version 2.1 firmware update for its Z9 mirrorless camera system brings improvements to autofocus and addresses an issue that users had been encountering at sporting events, notes DP Review. A new High-Frequency Flicker Reduction mode lets users fine-tune shutter speeds in increments as small as 1/96th EV to cope with fast-refreshing LED display boards often used at sports venues. A few months ago, the US Copyright Office rejected Steven Thaler’s request to copyright a picture on behalf of an algorithm he dubbed the Creativity Machine. The Copyright Office found that Thaler’s AI-created image didn’t include an element of “human authorship” — a necessary standard, it said, for protection. While Thaler, who has now filed a lawsuit, may be making mischief, it does raise an issue for creators and photographers using programs like the Dall-E 2, writes Matt Growcoot at PetaPixel. The exhibition “Endangered and Extinct,” on view at the American Museum of Natural History, focuses on the loss of insect species around the world through the work of Levon Biss. The British photographer often collaborates with institutions like the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Oxford Museum of Natural History, gaining access to their archives and selecting insect specimens.
