Addendum: Penguin Escapes Seal by Taking a Boat Ride with Photographers

A group of photographers shooting from an inflatable boat in the Antarctic recently got closer to their subjects than they had expected to when a terrified penguin jumped into their boat to escape a hungry leopard seal. The unusual scene that transpired on December 28, 2021, was captured in a one-minute video by Russian wildlife photographer Vladimir Seliverstov, who was a passenger on the boat.   Read the full Story >>

Spotlight: Creating Black Fantasy Water Creatures

This year, Disney is expected to release a live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid with Black actress Halle Bailey in the leading role as Ariel. But Black mermaids have long predated Ariel, notes CNN—as far back as the “Watermeids" of South Africa, depicted in Khoisan rock paintings (some of which are believed to date back 28,000 years). Honor Roll: Rehab Eldalil Wins FotoEvidence W Award

Rehab Eldalil was selected as the winner of the 2022 FotoEvidence W Award — a prize aimed of showcasing the work of women photographers — with her project “The Longing of the Stranger Whose Path Has Been Broken.” Eldalil, who is based in Cairo, Egypt, says, “I started working on the project because I wanted to understand what it means to belong and re-root myself to my estranged Bedouin ancestry.”   Read the full Story >>

What We're Reading: Graciela Iturbide On Her Life in Photography

“I don’t try to change the world with my photographs. I take photographs of what I like, what I’m attracted to . . . maybe that’s selfish. I don’t intend to do more than photograph what I find compelling.” So says renowned photographer Graciela Iturbide in an interview at Artforum on the occasion of the exhibition “Graciela Itrubide: Helioytropo 37," at at Paris’s Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, through May 29.  “I try to never fall into folklore.
