By Peggy Roalf   Friday April 26, 2024

Friday, April 26, 6-8pm: Diedrick Brackens | blood compass at Shainman In this show, which occupies the gallery's two locations on Friday and Saturday, the weavings by Diedrick Brackens map an imagined place — visualizing the internal mechanisms and symbols that animate his work while removing the anchor of direct narrative. The scenes depicted in each weaving exist out of time, suspended between a …   Read the full Story >>

Minor Words: Photography and Writing

By Michelle Dunn Marsh   Thursday July 17, 2014

For many years I defined myself as a disciple. As I advance in my understanding of self and move beyond the language and traditions of my childhood, I make space for occasional equality with, rather than only service toward, my teachers. I have gained in this understanding through active consumption of the words, photographs, and sequences of Minor White (1908-1976). Sequencing is the …   Read the full Story >>

DIARY: The Artist's Palette

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday August 27, 2025

However we use color—as designers, painters, illustrators, printmakers—in whatever mediums we choose—by analog or digital means—and to whatever level of skill and practice—there is always more to learn. The recent snap of sweater weather here in NYC triggered a back-to-school state of mind, resulting in a studio cleanup of materials, and ideas about my own next art program. So when The Artist’s Palette  …   Read the full Story >>

Douglas Kirkland Meets Coco Chanel

By    Wednesday September 2, 2015

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971) is a fashion icon unlike any other. She invented modern clothing for women: At the height of the Belle Époque, she stripped women of their corsets and feathers, bobbed their hair, put them in bathing suits, and sent them out to get tan in the sun.   She introduced slacks, costume jewelry, and the exquisitely comfortable suit. She made the …   Read the full Story >>

Howardena Pindell at Large

By Peggy Roalf   Thursday April 5, 2018

The first time I encountered work by Howardena Pindell was her installation featured in the 2006-07 exhibition High Times, Hard Times: New York Painting 1967-1975, at the National Academy of Design, New York. Her radical feminism has squarely located her painting and photo-based work in the realm of protest and although she has exhibited widely and regularly since the 1970s, Pindell has had …   Read the full Story >>
