The DART Board: LA Now

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday July 28, 2021

It's July 29, 2021. A crowd gathers poolside at the historic hotel - conversations are happening - the chatter is lively - the mood is festive. The sun is shining as FELIX ART FAIR opens its doors. We see a camera crew following JERRY SALTZ as he begins his livestream of the fair….

Aerial view: two lines form, one to purchase TICKETS, the other for VIPs. Visitors are filing in steadily. There is excitement in the air. Flanking the registration booths, banners show a full GALLERY LIST of all participants.

BETH approaches the check-in station, grabs a BOXED WATER, and receives a map of the twenty-nine participating galleries in the special summer edition of Felix Art Fair in Los Angeles. She is ready to get back to experiencing art in-person after a year-long pause….

(Steps next to you)

Hey, how's it going. You seem to be stuck. Do you have your TICKETS yet? Once you check-in, head over to the CABANA PATIO and check out the booths all around the pool. Ya can't miss'em.

DEAN VALENTINE strolls past. Every ten feet, he's stopped and dragged into conversation. People hand him drinks, assembling a dizzying array of colorful straws, olives and fruit. He closes in on you.

Hey friend. You seem lost. Wanna come with me to {Uncle Paulie's}? I'm looking for MILLS MORÁN, you should meet him. Oh, and could you hold one of these for me? Why I am drinking at 11am?...

Psst. Hey. You look a little disoriented. Can I cheer you up? Still need TICKETS to get in? No? All good? Once you walk in make sure you find the limited-edition Felix print by Jonny Negron. It's located in the hallways around the cabana suites.

Felix was co-founded by Dean Valentine and brothers Al Morán and Mills Morán. The fair’s mission is to create an intimate experience that prioritizes connoisseurship, collaboration, and community.
The 2021 edition takes place July 31 through August 1 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. Public hours are Friday and Saturday from 11am - 8pm and Sunday 11am - 5pm.

Rights and Rituals: The Making of African American Debutante Culture
In November 1961, President John F. Kennedy and California Governor Pat Brown greeted 28 young ladies as they made their debut into society during The Links, Incorporated Los Angeles Chapter’s 10th annual cotillion at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The sitting president was foremost paying respect to singer Nat King Cole, whose daughter Carole was debuting that evening, yet his presence epitomized the emergent power of African American debutante culture.

Social organizations such as The Links, Incorporated, the Questionettes, and the 20th Century Onyx Club have a long history of challenging institutionalized stereotypes that limited the role and potential of Black girls. Rights and Rituals: The Making of African American Debutante Culture investigates the origins of these social organizations and the ways they supported young Black women’s participation in vital, albeit sometimes understated, race work. With a focus on the 1880s to the transformative decades of the 1950s and 1960s, Rights and Rituals looks specifically at how Black debutante culture developed in the West and offers a new perspective on its participants’ contributions, both visible and invisible, to the fight for civil rights.

Pieces of Work, a solo exhibition of new work by Melbourne-based artist Helen Johnson. Johnson (b. 1979) makes densely-composed works which embody the ambient and material dispositions of political histories, private affairs, and the painterly medium itself. Pictorial and textural planes collide, negotiate amongst themselves, and unfurl in manners reminiscent of the ever-shifting structures which undergird economic, sociological and interpersonal systems. Exhibition walk-through: July 31.

P·P·O·W is pleased to present a selection of vibrant gouaches by Judith Linhares (above) for Frieze Viewing Room, Los Angeles Edition. Spanning the past twelve years, the works on view showcase recurring motifs that foreground the artist’s distinct mark-making. Balancing expressionism and allegory, Linhares has formed an influential aesthetic which has been perpetually exercised over the course of her five-decade career. Fueled by the permissive, psychedelic atmosphere of the 1960s, Linhares continues to investigate the relationship between the conscious and unconscious, drawing upon her dreams for mythic narratives and kaleidoscopic compositions that pulsate with color. Info

On the occasion of Gallery Weekend Los Angeles, Regen Projects is pleased to present Inherent Form, an outdoor sculpture exhibition. Drinking Dust, the first solo exhibition by Dana Powell at the Los Angeles gallery, presents small-scale oil paintings depict moments of transition and anticipation. They take the shape of night drives, full moons, swimming pools, elevator doors, still lifes with fruit, explosions, and peep holes. Unrelated at first look, these subjects prove malleable apparatus in demonstrating the unsettling power of the ordinary, and emotive potential of small shifts in formal painting strategies. Considered austerity is applied to Powell’s tableaus of the everyday, offering a window to the familiar and its undertow. Info

Sean Raspet's self-titled solo exhibition will introduce a body of work presenting several new plant varieties that have been mutated via exposure to radiation. Raspet is known for his artworks that consist of liquid chemical formulations, often involving flavor and fragrance molecules, synthetic atmospheres, and other raw materials of the environment and economy. Raspet’s work in recent years has focused on the possibilities of synthetic ecology and biology—in particular, the use of artificial means to help increase biodiversity and produce more resilient plant species and ecosystems in the face of rapidly changing climate conditions. Info
