Emma Amos (b. 1937 Atlanta, GA - d. 2020 Bedford, NH) was a pioneering artist, educator, and activist. A dynamic painter and masterful colorist, her work was Influenced by classical antiquity, modern Western European art, Abstract Expressionism, the Civil Rights movement and feminism. In the current exhibition of paintings and prints, Amos displays her deep interest in history, longevity and memory. By implementing themes from Greek and Roman antiquity in her work, Amos marries the wide and converging interests that informed her art for decades and reflected the breadth of her culture.

Closing September 10: Gego | Measuring Infinity at the Guggenheim

The first major museum retrospective in New York devoted to the work of Gego, or Gertrud Goldschmidt (b. 1912, Hamburg; d. 1994, Caracas) offers a fully integrated view of the influential German-Venezuelan artist and her distinctive approach to the language of abstraction. Gego: Measuring Infinity features nearly 200 artworks from the early 1950s through the early 1990s, including sculptures, drawings, prints, textiles, and artist’s books, alongside photographic images of installations and public artworks, sketches, publications, and letters. More in DART

Closing September 10: Sarah Sze | Timelapse at the Guggenheim

This immersive show features a series of site-specific installations throughout the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum that explore her ongoing reflection on our experience of time and place in today’s digitally and materially saturated world. Bookending this installation are two key works from the museum’s collection, both exhibited for the first time in New York: Untitled (Media Lab)(1998), Sze’s first sculpture to incorporate video; and Timekeeper(2016), a monumental, multisensory installation that will mark the exhibition’s finale in the adjoining gallery on Tower Level 7. Watch the video here

Closing September 10: Darrell Ellis | Regeneration at The Bronx Museum

As moving as it is complex, the multifaceted work of Darrel Ellis (1958–1992) restages a lost vision of Black selfhood and domesticity. His oeuvre has presented a formidable challenge to curators and scholars over the last thirty years for its unfinished tenor, a perception heightened by his untimely death due to AIDS-related causes at age 33. This exhibition, co-organized with the Baltimore Museum of Art, offers the first comprehensive survey of this pioneering artist, whose highly original merging of painting, printmaking, and photography anticipated current artistic interest in archive, appropriation, and personal narrative.

Closing September 17: Pepón Osorio: My Beating Heart/ Mi corazón latiente at the New Museum

Known for his richly textured sculptures and installations, Pepón Osorio’s work is deeply invested in political, social, and cultural issues affecting Latinx and working class communities in the United States. My Beating Heart/ Mi corazón latiente is the artist’s most comprehensive exhibition to date and features selected works from the 1990s to today.

Closing September 17: In Praise of Dutch Masterpieces at The Met

Dutch paintings of the seventeenth century—the Golden Age of Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer—have been a highlight of The Met collection since the Museum's founding purchase in 1871. This exhibition brings together some of the Museum's greatest paintings to present this remarkable chapter of art history in a new light. News from the Home Office

For over 30 years American Photography has been holding a juried competition primarily for professional photographers. The AP39 Annual book, featuring the winners, and the launch event in New York in November will continue in 2023. But with the proliferation of so much great photography taken by everyone we are entering our sixth year of offering a competition for photo enthusiasts at all levels. You can see some of the highlights and winners from 2022 here. 

The deadline is Thursday 8/31/23 at 12 Midnight PST.
