Preview: Wednesday-Sunday, April 22-26: AIPAD The Photography Show at the Armory

AIPAD: The Photography Show, presented by The Association of International Photography Art Dealers each spring at the Park Avenue Armory, celebrates the medium’s irresistible alchemy, from its 19th-century origins to its practice by artists around the globe today.

One of the featured artists is Lynne Saville [above], whose work is presented by Yancey Richardson Gallery. Saville specializes in photographing cities between twilight and dawn, when the daylight gives way to moonlight, neon, and street light.

In her photographs of New York at night, the city appears suspended in time, as Saville captures the moment when one state of being is on the brink of becoming something else, when day turns to night, and night to day. Stripped of human presence, often caught in hidden or forgotten areas, our focus is drawn to fundamental elements of the city’s infrastructure exist in these photographs for their own sake rather than components of urban living. Thursday, April 16, 6-8 pm: Leon Kosoff at Luhrig Augustine

Sebastian Smee, art critic and author [The Art of Rivalry for one], says this: Just the most extraordinary vitality, emotion and movement in the paintings of Leon Kossoff, opening [this week] at Luhring Augustine in Chelsea. Everything is off-balance, unstable, the better to shrug off clichéd, routine ways of seeing. The paint = fresh fresh fresh - and much more richly colored than it sometimes seems in reproduction. Make every effort to see this show and if possible spend time with the paintings. Photographs don’t come close. Also, btw, Andrea Rose’s Kossoff catalogue raisonné is one of the great British art

Spring 2026 Dart Book Prize Deadline Extended to Friday, April 23

The DART Book Prize—one of our favorite features—is back. For this Spring 2026 edition, readers—and I know many of you are artbook lovers—are invited to write a caption for the photo above. But first some information to get you headed in the wildest possible direction.

You can tell just by looking that this is event is situated in The Flatiron District [then called The Photo District] because four out of the five participants are attired in black. The fact that the goods being rifled through are photo books and press proofs offers another clue.

Click to read the entire page: three winners will be offered a choice of books on art, photography or design.

Wednesday, April 22, and May 15, 11am-12:30pm: Plein Air Painting at Mount Vernon Hotel

Peggy will lead two watercolor workshops at the historic Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Built in 1799 as a carriage house, then converted into a "day hotel" in 1826, the Museum transports visitors back to a 19th-century country resort for New Yorkers escaping the hustle and bustle of -the city below 14th Street.

One of the New York’s great treasures, this stone building sits on land originally owned by Colonel William Stephens Smith, and his wife Abigail Adams Smith, daughter of Founding Father and second President of the United States, John Adams. The garden will be in full bloom, with flowering trees and 500 tulips ready to pose for you.

In addition to my watercolor workshops, there is a full menu of events, including wine tastings inside the Hotel and a photo tour of the Garden. This natural light photo tour is designed to highlight the authentic textures of MCHMG’s Federal-period interiors and the peak bloom of its 19th-century-style walled garden, which was the recipient of a 2025 Garden Club of America Zone Historic Preservation Commendation for Zone III. You can see the entire lineup of MVHMG events at on Eventbrite Please note visitor guidelines.

Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden, 421 East 61st Street, between First and York Avenues, New York, NY Info You can see photos of the Hotel and Garden on the MVHMG Instagram @mvhmuseum
