DART: Art + Illustration East

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday November 12, 2008

For those of you who still aren't getting enough politics and policy, there is plenty afoot in Our Fair City this week and beyond. Parsons The New School for Design continues its public programs in conjunction with the exhibition, OURS: Democracy in Action, through January. This Saturday, Parsons' annual Illustration Program Symposium jumps in with Picturing Politics, exploring current political and social visual commentary, co-sponsored by the Department of Politics at The New School for Social Research.

Guests include Steve Heller, who will present his new book, Iron Fists: Branding the Totalitarian State; Peter Kuper, a co-founder of the political 'zine World War 3 Illustrated, who will fill you in on Revolutions and Art; Steve Brodner, Anton Kannemeyer, Luba Lukova, and Rutu Modan, who will discuss The Pervasive Image with Joshua Brown; and visiting professor of media sociology Daniel Dayan, who will offer Images as Gestures: Toward an Ethics of Showing. You can scan the entire roster on the Illustration Department blog.

Editor's note: DART just expanded its coverage of the arts by dividing the country in two. This issue presents venues east of the Mississippi, with a focus on New York City. The next will expand its offerings in the City of Brotherly Love, thanks to the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. If you feel that Your Fair City has been slighted, send me contact information for the director of communications at the leading non-profit arts institution in your area and your fearless editor will form a search party. For now, hope to see you at the AI-AP party this Thursday! Peggy Roalf
