Continuing: Dress, Dreams & Desire at FIT
Dress, Dreams, and Desire: Fashion and Psychoanalysis is the first exhibition to explore the complex relationship between fashion and psychoanalysis. Curated by Dr. Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at FIT, the exhibition will feature approximately 100 looks by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gianni and Donatella Versace, John Galliano for Christian Dior Haute Couture, Rick Owens, Thierry Mugler, Vivienne Westwood, and many more.
Described by Suzy Menkes as "the Freud of Fashion," Steele has spent more than five years working on this exhibition and the accompanying book, which draws on the evolution of psychoanalytic ideas about sexuality and the unconscious, with sections devoted to themes such as the mirror stage, the skin ego, desire, and sexual difference. Steele said, “Fashion is a primary lens through which we see ourselves — and how others see us. Far from being superficial, fashion can be regarded as a ‘deep surface’ that communicates our unconscious desires and anxieties, with none of us fully aware of the messages we send. The Museum at FIT is dedicated to advancing knowledge of fashion, and psychoanalysis provides important clues about the power and allure of fashion, as well as the ambivalence and hostility that fashion also attracts.”

Opening Weekend: Fiber of Being at Culture Lab of LIC
An exhibition by Culture Lab LIC in collaboration with the Textile Study Group of New York. “The Fiber of Being” explores the enduring significance of fiber art in contemporary life. This exhibition explores how textiles, with their rich histories of handcraft and cultural storytelling, continue to be profoundly relevant—bridging the physical and the virtual, the traditional and the contemporary. How does fiber art assert material presence in an increasingly immaterial world? Fiber is not just a medium but a metaphor for the interconnected threads of existence, weaving together the past, present, and the future. Curated by Caitlin McCormack.
