The DART Board: 10.23.2024
When is a pigeon not a flying rodent? Hmmm…that’s a tough one for me. But when I read about the new plinth commission for the High Line, it began to make perfect sense. Paris-based Colombian artist Iván Argote told a reporter for Hyperallergic, “As much as you can imagine or see what the reactions of people will be, you will always be surprised, because [creating a work of public art] is a process that is completely out of your control.
"The most successful artworks in public spaces are those that function as a sort of catalyst for imagining new futures and pushing your imagination, but also something that creates friction with the cityscape….I know of the importance of the pigeons here in New York, and all the kind of reactions they generate: love and passion or hate and disgust,” Argote said. Saturday, October 26, noon-5 pm: James Holl | Particle Point Collisions
The Athens Cultural Center presents James Holl, Particle Point Collisions, an exhibition of recent paintings and sculpture, accompanied by the book launch of James Holl, The Landscape Painter 1972–2023. This new publication by Jim Holl, a longtime DART subscriber, chronicles the journey of a young artist from the era of modernism through the rise of postmodernism to the present. The artistic paths taken address the contrasting art theories and cultural shifts that influenced both the artist and New York City during these dynamic times. Arriving at the present, Holl distills landscapes to be of matter emerging from energy, which is the subject of this exhibition.
The Particle Point Collision paintings delve into the quantum scale of landscapes, capturing the traces and showers of light resulting from events that take placein a particle collider. Rather than breaking particles into smaller pieces, these collisions lead to a transformation of particles and the emission of electromagnetic light. The paintings capture these particle showers as traces, representing their path through time. The elemental points of energy, too small to be seen, are depicted through composition and color that vibrates visually, akin to how music resonates in the ear.
