Thursday, October 10: Flow States | La Trienel 2024 at El Museo

El Museo del Barrio announces commissioned projects, exhibition highlights, illustrated catalogue, and opening week programming for Flow States – La Trienal 2024, the museum’s second large-scale triennial of Latinx contemporary art. The exhibition will feature 33 artists working across the United States, Puerto Rico, and—for the first time—geographies that reflect the complexities of diasporic flows, with artists based in the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Above, L-R: Roberto Gil de Montes, Boom Box, 2023;; Lance de los Reyes, 33 22 Stable Strong, 2020-2021; Maria A. Emphasizing plurality and a sense of movement, the exhibition's title, Flow States, borrows from the psychology of creative focus and the fluidity of geographic boundaries  and cultural exchanges. As such, the phrase reflects the ever-changing paths of Latinx artistic diasporas that inform the exhibition. Participating artists share interests in transformation, hybrid belongings, collective memories, porosities of landscape, and material exchanges. These threads come together against a background of displacements and migrations that continue to transform our local and global ecosystems.

Thursday, October 10, 6pm: Connecting Threads talk at MAD

Join Museum of Arts and Design and The New York Public Library for a conversation in The Theater at MAD on the interplay between fabric and printmaking in contemporary art with artists Valerie Hammond, Bang Geul Han, and Jacquelyn Strycker. All three artists have pursued a rigorous multimedia inquiry of handcraft and materials that extends to forms of printmaking. Info Above, (left to right): Valerie Hammond,  Great Memory, 2008. Bang Geul Han, Warp and Weft, 2022. Jacquelyn Strycker, Arrival, 2023.

The conversation will be led by Madeleine Viljoen, Curator of Prints and the Spencer Collection at the New York Public Library. Viljoen is curator of NYPL’s current exhibition Line & Thread: Prints and Textiles from the 1600s to the Present, which includes works by Hammond and Strycker. The artists and curator will explore how the merging of printmaking and textiles encourages experimentation in each artist’s creative practice.

Thursday, October 10,  6:30-9pm: Sean Qualls | Inner Victories at Established

Join longtime DART subscriber, Sean Qualls for the opening of his solo show at Established Gallery. The exhibition features his recent work in children’s book, including the debut picture book "The Idean In You"  for Questlove’s imprint, which Qualls wrote and illustrated.

Sean Qualls finds inspiration everywhere. Growing up in the 70's in central New Jersey, his family didn't have much money for art supplies but he made the best of what was available; discarded paper, blank end pages from old books and sometimes walls much to his mother's chagrin. Some of his earliest inspirations were the crayons and coloring books his mom would buy for him and his older sister, drawing and handwriting competitions with classmates and an illustrated bible he received for Christmas in the 2nd grade. Sean's books and illustrations often explore history and non-fiction subjects. His fine art focuses on race & identity and the intersection of history & mythology, ultimately examining how we create our own identities or allow them to be scripted to for us. His work is included in the juried society of Illustrators show The Original Art, opening October 26th. Info Read Sean's inspiring interview in Park Slope Times.
