Photographer Ami Vitale’s new film, Remembering Sudan: The Last Northern White Rhino, focuses on Zacharia Mutai, the head rhino caregiver at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in northern Kenya, who cared for one of the last remaining northern white rhinos on the planet. But, Vitale notes, the film “is not just the story of one person’s loss or of the death of a rhino—it’s the story of the death of a species.”
“A loss of such magnitude is a loss for all of humanity,” Vitale explains. “Without these creatures, we suffer more than just the loss of ecosystem health. We suffer a loss of imagination, a loss of wonder, a loss of beautiful possibilities.”
The film premieres this month at the International Wildlife Film Festival (April 22 to 27 in Missoula, Montana.) But you can see it as part of a global viewing party that will take place on April 24. The event takes place at10 am Mountain Time; 12pm Eastern Time; and 5pm Greenwich Mean Time.
You can also donate to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and participate in a virtual post-screening Q&A with Vital and Zacharia Mutai, who will talk about the making of the film and the future of the northern white rhino. Your donation includes a 2-week rental of Remembering Sudan.
