
What We Learned This Week: World Press Photo Suspends 'Napalm Girl' Credit

Adding a new twist to the controversy over who took one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century, the World Press Photo organization announced recently that it has suspended the attribution of authorship for "Napalm Girl," the Pulitzer Prize-winning image from the Vietnam War long attributed to Associated Press photographer Nick Ut.The move came after a documentary film challenged 50 years of accepted journalism history by asserting that Ut did not take the photo. "We conclude that the level of doubt is too significant to maintain the existing attribution," noted WPP, explaining its action. AP has conducted its own investigations and concluded there was "no definitive evidence to warrant stripping Ut's photo credit."
