Books: The Legacy of Debutante Balls for Black American Youth

In Miranda Barnes’ debut photo book, Social Season, Black American boys and girls adorned in white gowns, pearls, tiaras, and tuxedos dance and laugh with quiet anticipation. “I sought to challenge the heavier-handed assumptions people often make about Black youth, so centering joy became essential,” Barnes tells the British Journal of Photography. Since 2002  the Caribbean-American photographer has been photographing debutante balls for Black American youth inside Detroit’s Masonic Temple.   Read the full Story >>

While browsing at a thrift store in England, an amateur photographer came across a vintage  Zeiss Ikon Baby Ikonta camera. He bought it for $13 and took it home. But when he examined his purchase, he was stunned to find a roll of undeveloped film still inside. Experts later developed the negatives, which probably date from the 1950s and depict a group ski trip in the Swiss Alps. Industry News: Flickr Announces New Photo Festival

The newly announced MODE by Flickr festival aims to take photography out of computers and put it back in real life, declares DIY Photography. The immersive event, which will take place from Sept, 18 to 20 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, combines “elements of a traditional trade show with a high-energy festival,” Flickr explains. “Each day there will be workshops, concerts, talks, demos, screenings, and meetups, all designed to leave photographers creatively recharged and more connected to their community.”   Read the full Story >>

Art News: Getty Museum Acquires Irving Penn's "Cuzco" Work

Photographer Irving Penn arrived in Lima, Peru in December 1948 for a Vogue fashion assignment, then traveled to the city of Cuzco, rented a portrait studio for three days, and, using a Rolleiflex camera, produced more than 2,000 portraits and street scenes. Now, reports Fine Books & Collecting, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles has acquired a major group of the images via a donation from The Irving Penn Foundation. This acquisition transforms the Getty into one of the most comprehensive repositories of photographs by Penn.   Read the full Story >>
