In 2021, Mark Zuckerberg changed the same of Facebook to Meta and began pouring money into his vision of an immersive metaverse of interconnected virtual worlds in which people would shop and play. Turns out it was a tough sell: Now, as Meta struggles to stay relevant in the newer AI tech boom, the company is s expected to make budget cuts of up to 30% for its metaverse initiative, ”Smart move, just late," Huber Research Partners analyst Craig Huber tells Bloomberg. The fire that broke out at the Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong’s Hong Kong’s Tai Po district late last month claimed at least159 lives. And notes Reuters, one image has come to symbolize the horror of the deadly blaze more than any other: It was made by photographer Tyrone Siu, who saw a man by the roadside gesturing with frantic grief when he arrived at the scene around an hour after the blaze started. “My wife is inside,” he screamed, pointing at the flames engulfing the apartment block. “It’s a picture that tells you everything straight away,” Siu tells Reuters.

Sarah Bradley, a Saskatoon-based conservationist with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, understands why people love snowy owls and want to get closer to them. But, notes the CBC, she's concerned by a social media-driven trend that poses a threat to their survival. Bradley said she’s heard of people using live bait, typically store-bought mice, to get the owls to come near. “If you are thinking about doing a snowy owl tour or joining an owl photographer, it's important to ask the question about how photos are being obtained and whether they're being taken ethically,” she says.
