For decades, the Leica rangefinder system has been synonymous with its brand and is the basis for the charming shooting experience that Leica M cameras are famous for. But, notes PetaPixel, with the new Leica M EV1, Leica “has forged a new path, and it is sure to polarize its fans.” Though it's shaped like the company's other M-series models, the M EV1 has no optical viewfinder or rangefinder mechanism, relying instead on an electronic viewfinder, adds DP review. It’s available everywhere except the USA, where gaining FCC approval has caused a delay. Projected price: $8,995.

Gilles Larrain, a lauded portrait photographer whose groundbreaking 1973 book, Idols, celebrated the pride and plumage of a subculture that at the time was largely ignored if not scorned, by the mainstream, died on Oct. 7 in Kauai, Hawaii, notes The New York Times. He was 86. Over the course of his career, he shot for magazines including Rolling Stone, Esquire, Vogue and Time, He was straight, and he had no ties to the drag world. Still, notes The Times, his book came to be regarded as a cult classic, celebrated as an early and daring celebration of gay and transgender life.
