While looking for ways to help commemorate Colorado’s 150th birthday next year, a group of historians in the state decided to track down the earliest known photograph made there. What they uncovered, notes KUNC, is striking: a daguerreotype from 1853, taken during an expedition across the West – more than 20 years before Colorado became a state in 1876. The experts at History Colorado believe the photo, which depicts a Cheyenne village near present-day Lamar, Colorado, was taken by American photographer Solomon Nunes Carvalho.

Natural Landscape Photography Awards Thursday October 2, 2025
Now in its fifth year, the Natural Landscape Photography Awards spotlight the “truthful depiction of the natural world, whether shooting digitally or on film.” (The competition does not preclude the use of editing tools such as Photoshop, if “used sensitively.”) Of the 11,023 photographs submitted, only 3,688 made it past the two initial screening rounds. Australian landscape photographer Joy Kachina, who is based in Tasmania, takes the top prize for a portfolio inspired by the beauty of Tasmania's forests.

GoPro GoPro says it is entering a "new era of fun and creativity" with its recently unveiled Max2 360° camera. The Max 2 promises significant changes from its six-year-old predecessor, including 8K 360-degree video, pro-grade recording options and better audio, notes DP Review. The new camera offers what GoPro emphasizes is "true" 8K 360-degree video: The company says it doesn't count any overlapping, black or unusable pixels and only considers effective pixels. GoPro also says it isn't upscaling footage or using AI to help reach 8K.
