Thomas Prior’s photographs “circle the edges of things, attentive to atmospheres rather than events,” notes Wallpaper, which spotlights Prior’s new book, Slip Me the Master Key (Loose Joints). The book brings together two decades of images exploring what Prior calls “quiet alarms” – photographs that capture the uncanny in the ordinary. Prior’s subject, adds Wallpaper, is the Anthropocene, the term coined to describe a proposed new geological epoch in which human activity has become the dominant force shaping the planet. The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) has condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the actions taken by ICE officers against journalists in Federal Plaza in New York City last week. “The assault on an a New York reporter and the serious injury inflicted on another journalist represent an unacceptable, blatant attack on press freedom,” the organization writes. The chief videographer of the Anadolu news agency was taken to a hospital after he was shoved to the ground by an ICE agent while attempting to cover migrant court hearings at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City, notes PetaPixel.

Swann Galleries Wednesday October 8, 2025
On October 16, Swann Galleries will feature what it calls “the full spectrum of the history of the photographic medium,” including work by Andy Warhol, Garry Winogrand, Herb Ritts, and Eugène Atget. The auction will also showcase a rare example of Steve McCurry’s "Children" portfolio, including his iconic "Afghan Girl" portrait ($15,000-20,000). The contemporary portion includes work by Barbara Kasten, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Carrie Mae Weems. Exhibition hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., October 11 and October 13, through Wednesday, October 15.
