State of the Art: ChatGPT Image Snares Suspect in Deadly Pacific Palisades Fire

A 29-year-old man was recently arrested on suspicion of starting the Pacific Palisades fire in Los Angeles that killed 12 people and destroyed more than 6,000 homes in January. Now the BBC reports that evidence collected from Jonathan Rinderknecht's digital devices included an image he generated on ChatGPT depicting a burning city,. Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida and has been charged with destruction of property by means of fire. One of the most destructive blazes in LA history, the fire erupted on January 7 near a hiking trail that overlooked the wealthy coastal neighborhood.   Read the full Story >>

The 1839 Awards has announced the winners of its International Photographer of the Year Contest, with the top prize going to portrait and fashion photographer Jaime Travezán for his series, “Dream,"shot as promotional material for the fashion designer Ade Bakare. The National Press Photographers Association has expressed concerns about how a sweeping drone ban in Chicago may violate First Amendment rights. The Federal Aviation Administration, acting at the request of the Department of Homeland Security, imposed drone ban over Chicago—the largest drone flight restrictions ever imposed in the United States. Spanning a 15-nautical-mile radius and covering more than 935 square miles, the restriction, bars unmanned aircraft systems from operating up to 400 feet above ground level throughout downtown Chicago, notes PetaPixel.   Read the full Story >>
